Relax, Relocate Or Raise A Family
In Hertford County North Carolina

Located along the northeastern border of the state, Hertford County is home to over 23,000 people living in six different towns. Large employers with operations in the county include a steel mill, Perdue Farms, an aluminum extrusion facility and a lumber processing facility. Hertford County is served by three U.S. highways and three state highways.

Hertford County is one of the original homes of the Meherrin Indian tribe, and plays host to a 6-square-mile reservation for the tribe today. The county was officially formed out of pieces of Bertie County, Chowan County, and Northampton County in 1759. It was so named in honor of Francis Seymour-Conway, the 1st Earl of Hertford and later the 1st Marquess of Hertford. In 1779, the northeastern part of the county was combined with pieces of Chowan County and Perquimans County to form Gates County.

The county area has a temperate climate with cold (but never severe) winters and moderately warm summers. Monthly precipitation averages about 3-5 inches, and the annual snowfall average is around 7-10 inches.

The Hertford County Public School system includes five traditional schools plus a special student development center.
Each of the schools is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and
School Improvement, as well as the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. A comprehensive curriculum is offered to students of all levels from pre-school up through the 12th grade.

Higher education is offered through Roanoke-Chowan Community College and Chowan College.

Roanoke Chowan Hospital serves the region's health care needs.

Hertford County contains part of the Chowan Swamp, a public game area where you can fish and hunt for deer, turkey, bear, raccoon, rabbit, squirrel and waterfowl.

There is also public fishing access to the Chowan River available in the town of Winton. Largemouth bass, white perch and black crappie await your lure in this river.

There are four public libraries for readers to enjoy in the county.
